What is HTML?

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is the standard language used to create documents that can be displayed as Web pages on the Internet. Simply put, HTML is like the skeleton of a Web page; it defines the structure. When you look at a Web site, from the headings and paragraphs to the images and links, it's all built with HTML.

How does HTML work?

HTML documents consist of "elements," which are represented by "tags. Here is a basic explanation:

  1. Tags: These are usually in pairs and tell the browser how to display the content between them. For example, <h1>This is a header</h1>. The <h1> is the opening tag and </h1> is the closing tag. Together, they define the text between them as a header.
  2. Elements: These are the building blocks of a Web page. An element includes the opening tag, the actual content, and the closing tag. For example, a paragraph is created with the <p> element: <p>This is a paragraph.</p>.
  3. Attributes: These are additional pieces of information in the opening tag that modify the element's properties. For example: <a href="http://www.voorbeeld.nl">This is a link</a>. Here href is an attribute that specifies the URL of the link.

Why is HTML important?

Without HTML, websites would not exist as we know them. Here are some reasons why HTML is fundamental:

  1. Universal Web Language: No matter where you are, what browser you are using or what device you are on, HTML is universally understood, making it the backbone of the Web.
  2. Flexibility: HTML allows developers and designers to decide how content is presented. They can customize the layout, colors, fonts and much more.
  3. Integration: HTML works seamlessly with other Web languages such as CSS (for styling) and JavaScript (for interactive features) to create fully functional and well-designed Web sites.

At its core, when you look at a Web site, you're looking at a page built with HTML. It defines structure and content, from the biggest headlines to the smallest footnotes. It is the language that browsers understand and the foundation of every piece of information you see on the Internet. Whether you're reading a simple blog, shopping online, or watching a video, HTML plays a crucial role in how that content is presented to you.
