What is FTP?

FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol." Simply put, it's a way to move files from one computer to another over the Internet. Imagine you have a large file on your computer that you want to share with someone else, or you want to put a file on a Web site. FTP is one of the methods you can use to do this. It is like a bridge that takes files safely from one place to another.

How does FTP work?

FTP may sound technical, but let's keep it simple. Here's how it usually works:

  1. FTP server: In order to send or receive files, there must be a "server" somewhere that stores those files. You can think of it as a large digital storage space.
  2. FTP client: This is a program you use on your computer to connect to that server. It's a bit like a Web browser, but instead of Web pages you view files.
  3. Login: Before you can transfer files, you usually have to login to the server with a username and password. This ensures that only authorized people have access.
  4. Transferring files: Once connected, you can drag and drop or copy/paste files between your computer and the server.

Why do people use FTP?

While there are many ways to share files (such as e-mail attachments or cloud storage services), FTP has some advantages:

  1. Large files: FTP is very good at transferring very large files that are too large to send as attachments in an e-mail.
  2. Many files at once: If you need to transfer many files at once, FTP can do it more efficiently than some other methods.
  3. Reliability: FTP is an old and proven system. It is stable and reliable, which means it rarely goes wrong.
  4. Access control: FTP allows you to give specific people permission to view or download certain files. This is useful if you don't want everyone to be able to see everything.

In simple words, FTP is a method of moving files over the Internet. Whether you have large files you want to share with someone or you are working on a website and need to get your files there, FTP is like a digital moving van that helps you get your stuff from one place to another.
