What is hyperlink?

A hyperlink, often simply called a "link," is a reference or connection in a digital document that, when clicked, leads the user to another part of the same document or to another document. This may be another Web page, an image, a video or some other type of file. It is a fundamental element of the Web, making information on the Internet interconnected and navigable.

How do hyperlinks work?

Let's dig a little deeper into how hyperlinks work:

  1. Anchor text: This is the visible, clickable text of a hyperlink. For example, in the link <a href="https://www.voorbeeld.nl">Visit our website</a>,"Visit our website" is the anchor text.
  2. Attribute: In HTML, a link is created with the <a> element and the href attribute, in which the URL (Web address) of the destination is placed. In the above example, the link leads to"https://www.voorbeeld.nl."
  3. Types of hyperlinks: There are different types of links:
    • Internal links: Referring to content within the same Web site.
    • External links: Refer to content on another website.
    • Download links: Refer to a file that, when clicked, is downloaded.

Why are hyperlinks important?

Hyperlinks are the connective tissue of the Internet. Here are some reasons why they are so crucial:

  1. Navigation: Links allow users to easily jump from one page to another, creating a fluid and intuitive online experience.
  2. Structure: They help organize information on the Web, connecting related pages and topics.
  3. Reliability: By linking to reliable sources, writers and website owners can support the reliability and accuracy of their content.
  4. Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Links play a crucial role in how search engines assess the importance and relevance of Web pages. Websites with quality inbound and outbound links tend to have better rankings in search results.

In simple terms, the Internet is a big web of links. Every time you move from one page to another, you are using a hyperlink. They make the Web accessible, usable and valuable, and are one of the fundamental building blocks that make the Internet work the way it does.
