What is search engine optimization?

Search engine optimization, often called SEO (Search Engine Optimization), refers to the process of improving a website to increase its visibility in the organic (non-paid) search results of search engines. This is done with the goal of attracting more visitors to the website. A properly optimized website will appear higher in the search results of search engines such as Google, which can lead to more visitors and potentially more customers, leads and sales.

How does search engine optimization work?

  1. Technical SEO: This involves optimizing the technical aspects of a website. Examples include improving the loading speed of the website, ensuring a mobile-friendly design, and creating a clear and understandable sitemap. Having a secure website (for example, by means of an SSL certificate) is also important here.
  2. On-page SEO: This focuses on website content. This includes ensuring quality content, using titles and subtitles correctly, and optimizing images. Also, using relevant keywords - the words or phrases people type into search engines - is crucial in this step.
  3. Off-page SEO: This deals with external factors that can affect a website's ranking in search engines. This includes things like link building (getting links from other websites to your website) and building a strong online profile through guest blogs or social media activities, for example.

Why is search engine optimization important?

  1. Online visibility: In an era when many people search for a product or service online first before making a purchase, it is essential for businesses to be visible online. By appearing higher in search results, a business can reach more potential customers.
  2. Cost savings: Unlike paid ads in search engines (e.g., Google Ads), SEO results are organic. This means businesses do not have to pay every time someone clicks on their link in search results.
  3. Credibility and trust: Websites that rank higher in search engines are often considered more trustworthy by users. This can lead to greater trust in the brand or service being offered.
  4. Better understanding of customers: By analyzing the keywords on which a Web site is found, a company can better understand the needs and wants of its customers.

Search engine optimization is an ongoing process. The algorithms that search engines use to rank Web sites change regularly, which means that businesses must constantly adjust and update their SEO strategies. Despite these challenges, it is a crucial and valuable marketing strategy that, if done correctly, can lead to significant growth and success for a business.
